Catch the larger particles.
MF holds back fine particles floating in the water. Its openings are generally larger than those in a UF membrane. It may be enough when the job is to remove these solids before the next use or treatment step.
Ultra filtration / Micro Filtration
Ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF) work like fine strainers. Both use a filter called a membrane to hold back particles while water passes through. UF usually has smaller openings than MF, so it can catch finer particles. Neither is a salt-removal step.

UF usually has smaller openings. It can hold back finer particles that may pass through MF. The actual result depends on the chosen membrane, the water and how the system is maintained.
We choose between them using water tests and the quality needed for the next job. A finer filter is not automatically the right choice, and you do not always need MF followed by UF.
What stays behind?
The filter holds back particles that are too big to pass through its tiny openings. Choosing the right filter and keeping it in good condition matter.
Stir salt into water and it seems to disappear, but it is still there. That dissolved salt can pass through both UF and MF. Removing it needs a different step, such as RO.
The bigger picture
Water carrying small solids goes in. Water with fewer particles comes out, and the trapped dirt must be removed during cleaning. Either UF or MF may fit this job.
Reverse osmosis removes dissolved salts. UF or MF can help protect its membranes from particles, but other substances may still need separate treatment.
See how RO worksThe filter is flushed and cleaned to remove trapped dirt. That dirty cleaning water also needs to be collected and treated.
Before choosing a system
Check how much dirt and oil the water contains and whether anything could damage or block the filter.
Plan how to wash the filter, when to stop for cleaning and where the dirty wash water will go.
Decide what the water will be used for and whether it needs more treatment after UF or MF.
Let’s talk about cost
Think of UF and MF as fine filters that need regular washing. The cost includes buying and connecting the system, then keeping its membranes clean and in good condition.
You pay for membrane units, pumps, pipes and controls. Equipment to wash the membranes, and any treatment needed before UF or MF, must also be included in the plan.
Pumps use electricity. Washing uses water and may use cleaning chemicals. Budget for checks, waste-water handling and replacement membranes when needed.
The choice of UF or MF, membrane material and amount of water affect the price. Dirtier water may need more preparation and cleaning. We compare the complete setup and running needs, rather than assuming one type is always cheaper.
